Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, who sought closer relations with China during and after his brief tenure, died Thursday at age 90, his son announced Monday. The Nikkei business daily reported that the cause was heart failure.
Fukuda served as prime minister from September 2007 to 2008, succeeding Shinzo Abe after his abrupt resignation. The son of former Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda, he was the first child of a Japanese prime minister to later hold the office himself.
During his premiership, Fukuda hosted Chinese President Hu Jintao on a state visit in May 2008. The leaders issued a joint statement pledging to strengthen a “mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests.” Fukuda also chaired the Group of Eight summit in Hokkaido that July, where leaders adopted a goal of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2050.
Domestically, his government helped secure compensation for people infected with hepatitis C through contaminated blood products, and Fukuda twice apologized to victims. His administration also laid the groundwork for the Consumer Affairs Agency, which was established in 2009.
Before becoming prime minister, Fukuda served as chief cabinet secretary under Yoshiro Mori and Junichiro Koizumi. He entered the Lower House in 1990 as a representative from Gunma Prefecture and retired from politics in 2012. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed “deep sorrow” following news of his death.
