US President Donald Trump has endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s October 27 parliamentary election, urging voters to back his longtime ally as polls point to another possible deadlock.
In posts on Truth Social, Trump offered his “Complete and Total Endorsement” of Netanyahu and described him as an “outstanding Warrior Prime Minister.” Referring to the US-Israeli war against Iran, Trump wrote: “Vote for Bibi Netanyahu for Prime Minister, we have to finish the job that we started!” Netanyahu thanked Trump for his support and said the two countries would “complete the mission.”
US Vice President JD Vance declined to follow Trump’s lead. “I’m not anti-endorsing him. I’m not pro-endorsing him. I’m not getting involved in Israeli elections,” Vance told journalist Mark Halperin on Monday, adding that he was focused on endorsing US candidates.
Netanyahu’s main challenger, Gadi Eisenkot, expressed appreciation for Trump’s contribution to Israeli security but said Israeli voters alone would choose the country’s next leader. He added that Washington would work with whichever government emerged.
Opinion polls cited by Deutsche Welle and The Irish Times suggest neither Netanyahu’s alliance of right-wing and religious parties nor the anti-Netanyahu opposition is likely to secure the 61 seats required for a majority in the 120-seat Knesset. Netanyahu is seeking to extend his tenure amid criticism over his government’s handling of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack and subsequent wars.
