Manchester United consider Carrick’s future after 3-0 Bournemouth defeat

Manchester United’s hierarchy is considering whether to dismiss head coach Michael Carrick after Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, according to The Irish Times.

Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute from Justin Kluivert’s free kick, and Marcus Tavernier doubled Bournemouth’s lead five minutes later. Evanilson completed the victory with 20 minutes remaining, rounding goalkeeper Senne Lammens before scoring from a narrow angle.

The defeat extended United’s winless run to eight matches in all competitions and left the club 16th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone. Bournemouth have now won 3-0 at Old Trafford in three of the past four seasons.

Carrick left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench throughout the match after Fernandes criticised his tactics following Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como. Carrick had described the selection as a “pure football” decision.

After the match, Carrick said he understood the uncertainty surrounding his position but had no specific expectation about his future. “It’s a tough situation,” he told Sky Sports. “What is next? I don’t know. I’ll always do what’s best for this football club.”

Home supporters largely backed Carrick after the final whistle before directing their frustration toward United’s players and owners. The Irish Times reported that former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is director of football Jason Wilcox’s preferred candidate if United make a change, while Unai Emery, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte are also under consideration.
