More than 1,000 people were arrested during nationwide protests in France on Saturday over living costs, inequality, wages, public services and school funding. France24 reported 1,314 arrests, while Deutsche Welle cited the government as saying more than 1,000 people had been detained.
The Interior Ministry estimated that 410,000 people joined demonstrations across the country, though unions gave a higher figure. Most marches remained peaceful, but clashes broke out on the sidelines of protests in Paris, Marseille, Lyon and several other cities.
In Paris, riot police used tear gas and water cannon against about 500 hooded youths who threw stones at officers, CNBC reported, citing Reuters. In Marseille, groups blocked a street with metal sheets, burned rubbish bins and threw rocks and bottles at police. Looters later raided two jewelry shops. Clashes were also reported in Bordeaux and Grenoble, while police used tear gas in Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, Nantes and Nice.
Authorities deployed more than 70,000 police officers and elite security personnel. The violence and property damage were less extensive than during the previous weekend, when rioters looted shops and set fire to Limoges’ historic city hall.
The protests began among high school students in suburban Paris concerned about teacher shortages and school facilities before expanding nationwide. Unions and protest groups have called for further demonstrations on October 31 and a national strike on November 5.
