Lula wins fourth term after historic Brazil election comeback

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth non-consecutive term on Sunday, overcoming a first-round defeat to right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro in an unprecedented electoral comeback.

Lula received 64.2 million votes, or 51.79%, against Bolsonaro’s 59.8 million, or 48.21%. He became the first candidate since Brazil returned to civilian rule in 1985 to lose the opening round and then win the runoff. Turnout increased after Lula’s campaign focused on mobilising abstainers and reconnecting with working-class voters.

Addressing supporters in São Paulo, Lula declared: “Democracy always, dictatorship never again,” and said his fourth term would prioritise listening to Brazilians.

Bolsonaro refused to recognise the result and called for it to be annulled, challenging a nationwide two-hour extension of voting. Both campaigns had requested longer voting because of transportation problems and severe weather. Supreme Electoral Court president Kássio Nunes Marques, who was appointed by Bolsonaro’s father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, confirmed Lula’s victory and said the extension had not altered the outcome.

Leaders across the political spectrum congratulated Lula, including the presidents of Chile, Peru, Colombia and Mexico. By Monday morning, Argentine President Javier Milei and US President Donald Trump had not publicly recognised the result.

Brazilian markets reacted negatively, with São Paulo’s stock exchange falling 15% at the open before recovering somewhat. Climate activists also welcomed the result, citing Lula’s previous record of reducing Amazon deforestation.
