Serbia’s student-led movement won Sunday’s snap parliamentary election, prompting President Aleksandar Vučić to concede defeat and setting off celebrations in Belgrade, Novi Sad and other cities.
Vučić told supporters that preliminary results showed his Serbian Progressive Party-led list taking 105 seats in the 250-member parliament, compared with between 135 and 140 for the Student List. A later projection from election monitor CeSID put the students on 140 seats and Vučić’s bloc on 103, with seven seats going to national minority parties. A parliamentary majority requires 126 seats.
Tens of thousands gathered on Belgrade’s main boulevards, waving Serbian flags, setting off flares and celebrating amid honking car horns. Crowds also removed fences and tents from a central park where Vučić loyalists had maintained a camp. Thousands celebrated in Novi Sad, where the student movement began after 16 people were killed in the collapse of a railway station canopy on November 1, 2024.
The disaster triggered protests that broadened over nearly two years into opposition to corruption and the government’s influence over public institutions. The movement subsequently formed the Student List, campaigning on pledges to fight corruption, depoliticise state institutions and restore citizens’ rights. Its campaign was led by Ilija Srdanović, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad.
European leaders began congratulating the Student List on Monday, while international observers were expected to issue a preliminary assessment of the election.
