Cyclone Arnab formed over the Bay of Bengal on Monday and is forecast to intensify before crossing the Andhra Pradesh-Yanam coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on the morning of October 28, the India Meteorological Department said.
The storm was about 650 kilometres east-southeast of Visakhapatnam on Monday morning and moving west-northwest. The IMD expects it to become a very severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal on October 27, then make landfall as a severe cyclone with sustained winds of 115-125 km/h and gusts reaching 140 km/h.
Authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are preparing evacuations as forecasts call for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. A senior Andhra Pradesh disaster-management official told Reuters that 570,000 people had been identified as vulnerable and evacuations would begin Monday evening. Boats at sea were ordered to return ashore, while state authorities deployed disaster-response personnel and prepared shelters in districts along the projected path.
Odisha assigned ministers and senior officials to vulnerable districts and began moving residents of low-lying areas and fragile homes to cyclone shelters. Schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres in five southern districts were ordered closed as a precaution.
The IMD issued red and orange rainfall alerts across coastal Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha. It also placed four Telangana districts under an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain on October 28, with four others under a yellow alert.
