House and Senate Control in Focus as US Midterms Near

publishers 66articles 92first reported 3 Oct, 09:50 UTCdeveloping since 4 Oct · 29 editions

With the November 3 US midterm elections approaching, Democrats are favored to win the House while the contest for the Senate remains closer, according to forecasts cited by Newsweek.

The Silver Bulletin gave Democrats a 95% chance of taking the House and a 76.4% chance of controlling the Senate as of October 22, projecting an average 52–48 Democratic majority. VoteHub put the party’s chances of Senate control at 60%, while Decision Desk HQ estimated 57%. Republicans currently hold a 53–47 Senate majority.

Eight Senate contests—Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Maine, Michigan, South Carolina and Texas—were separated by fewer than four percentage points in the Silver Bulletin polling average, Newsweek reported. The Guardian said Democrats need to retain all their current Senate seats and gain four more to take control.

Economic pressures are also affecting battleground states. Bloomberg reported that average gasoline prices rose 17 cents to $4.61 a gallon in Michigan and 10 cents to $4.08 in Ohio after a problem at a Chicago-area refinery. Ohio had suspended state gasoline and diesel excise taxes in response to costs associated with the Iran war.

Campaigns and outside political groups are increasingly using artificial-intelligence-generated advertising, according to BBC Verify, which tracked dozens of such ads in key races. Meanwhile, former Vice President Kamala Harris has returned to the campaign trail, Reuters reported.
