The Archdiocese of New York has agreed to an $800 million settlement covering claims from about 1,300 people who said they were sexually abused by clergy members and lay workers, according to reports Saturday.

Attorney Jeff Anderson said all plaintiffs had accepted the agreement, which would end more than seven years of litigation. Anderson’s firm represents more than 250 plaintiffs, according to NPR. The settlement is not yet final because paperwork remains unsigned; Archbishop Ronald Hicks told clergy that signing is expected during the week of Nov. 6.

“We are on the verge of being able to, please God, bring some measure of healing and reconciliation to all victim-survivors,” Hicks wrote in an email shared with NPR. Anderson said his clients felt both relief that the legal proceedings were ending and sorrow over the abuse they experienced.

The New York Times reported that each claimant is expected to receive at least $250,000, with larger payments possible depending on the extent of the abuse. The settlement would be the second-largest involving a U.S. Catholic archdiocese, after the Archdiocese of Los Angeles agreed in 2024 to pay $880 million to about 1,000 abuse survivors.

The New York archdiocese agreed to mediation in December 2025 and said it had cut staff and planned property sales to help raise money for compensation.
