Genomic sequencing has found that the Ebola virus detected in Nigeria’s sole confirmed case is closely related to the virus identified in Kenya’s first imported case, Nigerian Health Minister Muhammad Pate said Friday.
Pate said the two Bundibugyo ebolavirus samples differed by one mutation, but stressed that the finding does not establish a direct epidemiological link or show how the Nigerian patient became infected. Sequencing was conducted by teams at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and Redeemer’s University.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating whether the Nigerian patient and Kenya’s first confirmed patient crossed paths at Entebbe International Airport in Uganda on October 3. Officials have not established that the travelers encountered each other or that transmission occurred at the airport. Uganda says it has no active Ebola cases and that passing through the country does not prove exposure occurred there.
Nigeria’s patient, a woman who had recently traveled in East Africa, developed symptoms on October 7 and sought care in Abuja on October 11. She remains the country’s only confirmed case. Nigerian authorities identified 44 close contacts and have begun quarantine, testing and monitoring; some results are negative and others remain pending.
Kenya has recorded nine confirmed cases, including one death, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Eight were linked to the first imported case, including infections among four healthcare workers.
