Alexander Volkanovski retained the UFC featherweight championship with a second-round technical knockout of Movsar Evloev in the UFC 333 main event Saturday at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
Evloev secured three takedowns in the opening round, but Volkanovski repeatedly returned to his feet. The champion took control with precise striking in the second, sending Evloev backward with a combination before following him to the canvas and landing unanswered ground strikes. Referee Marc Goddard stopped the fight at 4:54, six seconds before the end of the round.
The result ended Evloev’s 20-fight unbeaten professional record. Volkanovski, 38, said afterward that he had promised his wife a quick finish following their wedding anniversary. The National reported that the victory gave Volkanovski a featherweight-record ninth title-fight win, moving him ahead of Jose Aldo.
In the co-main event, Petr Yan retained his bantamweight title with a unanimous decision over Merab Dvalishvili. All three judges scored the fight 48-47 for Yan, who resisted repeated takedown attempts and used combinations and body strikes to earn his second victory over Dvalishvili in their three meetings.
Elsewhere on the main card, Lone’er Kavanagh stopped Ramazan Temirov in the first round, Alexander Volkov defeated Rizvan Kuniev by unanimous decision, and Aaron Pico earned a first-round stoppage against Losene Keita.
