Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany remained in hospital in stable condition on Saturday after collapsing while watching the club’s reserve team train on Friday.
The 40-year-old is undergoing examinations to determine the cause of the collapse. He had been unwell with a virus in recent days, missing a training session and a news conference before returning to the dugout for Wednesday’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal. Bayern have not publicly confirmed whether the virus caused Friday’s incident.
Sporting director Max Eberl said he had spoken with Kompany and his wife and that further test results were needed. Bayern would not set a return date, he said, but expected the Belgian to be absent for weeks rather than days.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority,” Eberl said. “Vinnie will be given all the time he needs.”
Assistant coach Aaron Danks will oversee the team during Kompany’s absence, including Sunday’s Bundesliga match at Freiburg. Danks said he had contacted Kompany only to check on his health and had avoided discussing football. Bayern said it had full confidence in the existing coaching staff and was not considering changes.
The reserve team’s match was postponed following the collapse, but Bayern did not seek to postpone the senior team’s trip to Freiburg. Manchester City, where Kompany spent 11 years as a player and served as captain, sent wishes for his recovery.
