North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made an unannounced one-day visit to the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday, meeting senior Chinese officials and pledging to strengthen relations between the two countries, state media reported.
Kim was accompanied by senior North Korean officials, including Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui and his sister, Workers’ Party official Kim Yo Jong. He met Wang Huning, China’s fourth-ranking official, who conveyed greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other officials also attended, according to Yonhap, citing North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency.
The visit came ahead of the 76th anniversary of China’s entry into the 1950-53 Korean War in support of North Korea. Kim paid tribute at a memorial to Chinese soldiers and said Pyongyang would remember their sacrifice and continue the two countries’ friendship. He also attended a banquet hosted by Wang at Xi’s direction and toured a bus factory in Dandong.
Kim returned to North Korea using the newly opened New Amnok River Bridge, also known as the New Yalu River Bridge, which links Dandong with the North Korean city of Sinuiju. The bridge opened earlier in October, more than a decade after its construction was completed in 2014.
The trip was Kim’s first known visit to China since September 2025 and his sixth since taking power in 2011.
