Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, moving to the brink of the Formula One world championship with four rounds remaining.
The 20-year-old Italian delivered a dominant victory after securing his first pole position since July. However, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate George Russell kept the championship contest alive by finishing fourth and eighth, respectively.
Antonelli can secure the title at the next race in Mexico City by scoring at least two points, equivalent to a ninth-place finish, even if Russell wins. A championship there would make Antonelli the youngest Formula One world champion.
The victory continued a strong weekend for Antonelli, who had described himself as “ecstatic” after returning to pole position in Austin. Although he maximized his result in Texas, the finishing positions of Hamilton and Russell prevented him from clinching the championship immediately.
