At least nine people were killed and dozens wounded when gunmen opened fire during a funeral procession at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in the village of Hammoud, in southern Jordan’s Karak governorate, on Friday, October 23.
Reports placed the number of injured between 34 and about 40. The assailants fled after the shooting, prompting Jordanian security forces to launch a manhunt.
King Abdullah II vowed that the attack would face the “harshest retaliation,” saying Jordan would “strike with an iron fist” against those who threaten the country. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan declared three days of national mourning, with flags lowered to half-mast at government and public institutions.
Governments across Asia condemned the attack and offered condolences. India said it stood firmly with Jordan and reaffirmed its commitment to fighting terrorism. Malaysia described the shooting as an extremist attack and a grave violation of the sanctity of religious sites. Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong condemned the deliberate targeting of civilians at a place of worship, while Indonesia expressed solidarity with Jordan and supported efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said its embassy in Amman was coordinating with local authorities to help ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens in Jordan.
