Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won reelection to a fourth nonconsecutive term on Sunday, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested runoff. Official results cited by Deutsche Welle showed Lula receiving 51.7% of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 48.2%. Bolsonaro refused to concede and called for the results to be annulled.

Leaders from several regions congratulated Lula. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described the result as a “historic election victory” and praised Lula’s record on poverty reduction, social justice and advocacy for developing countries. Anwar said Malaysia wanted to expand trade and investment with Brazil, strengthen links between ASEAN and Latin America, and deepen bilateral relations.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung called Lula a “special friend and comrade” and said he hoped to meet him again. Yonhap reported that the two leaders have formed a personal bond through their shared experience of working as children.

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Lula’s contribution to relations between Russia and Brazil. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu and Seychelles President Patrick Herminie also welcomed the result and expressed interest in greater cooperation.

In his victory speech, Lula called for tighter regulation of major technology platforms following allegations that Meta interfered in the campaign. Brazilian shares and the real fell Monday, prompting a half-hour suspension of stock-market trading.
