President Donald Trump renewed his call for New Mexico to change its name to “New America,” arguing in a Monday post on Truth Social that the change would bring the state “great value and prestige.”
“We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America,” Trump wrote. He also claimed that renaming the state would raise home values and incomes and repeated allegations that New Mexico has “crooked elections.” No evidence supporting those claims was cited.
Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham rejected the proposal, writing on X that New Mexico had its name before the United States existed and “we’ll be New Mexico forevermore.” She defended the security of the state’s elections and highlighted state policies including universal no-cost child care and replacement health care subsidies.
Trump has promoted the name “New America” repeatedly since at least September, including through social media posts and altered images. He has compared the proposal with his administration’s efforts to have federal agencies use “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico and “Lake America” for Lake Ontario.
A president cannot unilaterally change the name of a state. Such a change would have to proceed at the state level. In 2020, Rhode Island voters approved a constitutional amendment shortening that state’s official name.
