France extends targeted curfews after calm night following riots

French authorities renewed targeted curfews in Paris, Lyon and other cities on Tuesday after police reported no major incidents overnight, following some of the country’s worst rioting in years.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said the restrictions introduced Monday had “contributed to calm overnight” and that prefects, working with mayors, would impose additional curfews wherever conditions required them. Paris police said restrictions around Place de la République and the Les Halles shopping district would remain in place “for as long as necessary.” Lyon renewed a 9 p.m.-to-6 a.m. curfew in its city center, while Marseille imposed one for unaccompanied minors.

The measures followed nationwide demonstrations on Saturday that grew out of student protests over conditions in secondary schools and widened to include concerns about living costs. Rioters targeted public buildings and businesses in several cities. Authorities estimated that at least 3,000 businesses were damaged or looted, and at least 2,400 people were arrested.

Lecornu said a “massive” security deployment was planned for another round of protests called for Saturday by student unions and groups associated with the Yellow Vest movement. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said soldiers assigned to France’s Sentinelle anti-terrorism operation would guard sensitive sites, freeing police and gendarmes for crowd control.

Police also arrested a suspect Tuesday in connection with the arson attack that heavily damaged Limoges city hall, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said. Separately, the government announced plans for interest-free loans of up to €50,000 for businesses affected by the unrest and looting.
