A clean-up was under way Monday after Storm Boelo brought damaging winds, flooding and widespread travel disruption to the UK and Ireland, killing two people and leaving tens of thousands of properties without electricity.
Two men were killed by falling trees in the UK on Sunday, the BBC reported. One man in his 20s died when a tree struck his car in north London, while a 60-year-old man was killed in Mid Kelton, Dumfries and Galloway.
About 90,000 UK properties remained without power Monday, according to the Energy Networks Association. Repair work was hindered by continued strong winds, while fallen trees and flooding blocked roads and rail lines. Hundreds of flights were delayed or cancelled at airports including Dublin, Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow during the storm.
Winds exceeded 80mph in exposed parts of Scotland, reaching 82mph on Tiree and about 84mph in Argyll and Bute. Events and attractions were cancelled or closed, including Edinburgh Castle and Liverpool’s River of Light event.
In Ireland, about 41,000 homes, farms and businesses—mainly in the northwest—were without electricity Sunday morning, ESB Networks said. A further 7,000 customers lost power in Northern Ireland, where fallen trees closed roads and high winds shut the Foyle Bridge in Derry.
The Met Office issued another yellow wind warning for Monday evening into early Tuesday across western England, Wales and Scotland and eastern Northern Ireland, warning of possible additional outages, large coastal waves and travel delays.
