Audi plans to invest about $4 billion in its first U.S. production plant, a Georgia factory expected to create approximately 4,500 jobs and produce up to 200,000 vehicles annually.
President Donald Trump announced the project Saturday at a Republican campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Audi CEO Gernot Döllner joined Trump onstage and said the Volkswagen-owned luxury brand was making a long-term investment in the U.S. market. Reuters and DW reported that Döllner faced criticism, including from German union representatives, over his appearance at the campaign event.
Construction at the Middle Georgia Mega Site near Macon is scheduled to begin in 2027, with production planned for the early 2030s. Audi said the factory will build premium SUVs, while CNBC reported that the planned models are the Q7, Q8 and Q9. Roughly half of its output is expected to be exported.
Döllner said Sunday that Audi chose Georgia after evaluating more than 70 locations and negotiating with public officials for months. He described the project as a business decision intended to expand U.S. sales and reduce tariff exposure. Audi currently imports all vehicles sold in the United States from Europe or Mexico, and Döllner said U.S. tariffs cost the company €1.2 billion last year.
The CEO said the Georgia investment would not shift work from Germany, where Volkswagen is restructuring operations and plans substantial job cuts and plant closures in the coming years.
