Serbia’s student-backed opposition defeated President Aleksandar Vučić’s alliance in Sunday’s snap parliamentary election, ending 14 years of political dominance by Vučić and his Serbian Progressive Party. Vučić conceded after preliminary results indicated that the Student List had secured a parliamentary majority.
The latest CeSID projection gave the Student List 140 seats in the 250-seat parliament, compared with 103 for Vučić’s bloc, with national minority parties taking the remaining seven. Earlier figures cited by Vučić put the students on 135 to 140 seats and his party on 105.
Tens of thousands celebrated in Belgrade, Novi Sad and other Serbian cities, waving flags, setting off flares and dismantling fences around a pro-Vučić encampment near parliament. The movement emerged after the November 2024 collapse of a concrete canopy at Novi Sad railway station killed 16 people, prompting protests over alleged corruption and government negligence. It later fielded a full slate of candidates drawn from professions including medicine, academia, agriculture and sport.
Celebrations continued on Monday, when about 30 protesters entered the newsroom of pro-Vučić Informer TV and called for editor Dragan Vučićević’s arrest. Vučić described the incident as an attack on press freedom. Student List candidate Ilija Srdanović urged supporters to remain calm and avoid violence. Protesters also gathered outside Pink TV, while regional public broadcaster RTV apologised for what it called uncritical, one-sided reporting.
The leaderless movement has not yet announced whom it will nominate as prime minister or to other senior government posts.
