London’s Metropolitan Police said it is reviewing its handling of a letter received in January 2019 that contained claims of alleged offending outside the United Kingdom involving Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
The force said the letter was reviewed and passed to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their awareness. Details of the allegations were not shared with other law enforcement agencies. The Met said its review would consider whether the matter should be referred to the police watchdog.
Meghan said she had been assured that allegations involving her father were being investigated. However, a source close to the matter said police were not conducting an investigation.
British newspapers The Sun and Daily Mail reported that images of child abuse had allegedly been found among Thomas Markle’s belongings at his former home in the Philippines. He denied the accusations, describing them to the Daily Mail as “sick lies.” Meghan said she was “deeply distressed” by the allegations and had previously blocked contact between her father and her children because of other claims she described as troubling and disturbing.
A Cebu City police officer told AFP anonymously that an investigation was underway in the Philippines. The FBI said it was aware of the allegations and would support Philippine authorities as appropriate.
