Rescue teams pulled two people, including a pregnant woman, from the rubble of a multi-storey building that collapsed Friday in Nairobi’s Eastleigh district, Kenyan media reported. Both survivors were taken to Kenyatta National Hospital, and no deaths had been reported by Saturday evening.
The unfinished building, described by the BBC as 16 or 18 storeys high, collapsed while dozens of construction workers were on its upper floors. Interior ministry official Kipchumba Murkomen said 66 of the 67 workers escaped unharmed and one suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. People feared trapped were believed to have been inside shops operating on the lower floors.
The BBC initially reported that seven people were missing. The Standard later said six remained unaccounted for after Saturday’s rescues, while at least 31 families had contacted authorities about missing relatives. Search teams continued working with heavy equipment, canine units and other specialists.
Police launched a search for the building’s owner and contractor and opened an investigation into the cause of the collapse and possible criminal liability. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the owners lacked the paperwork required for occupancy and that the project had not complied with construction guidelines. The National Construction Authority said the development had been registered in July 2025 and that it had identified the developer, contractor, architect and structural engineer.
