Israel imposed widespread movement restrictions across the occupied West Bank after two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on Israeli soldiers near a temporary checkpoint outside Hebron on Friday, killing two soldiers and wounding three others. Israeli forces killed both assailants during a gunfight that the military’s preliminary investigation said lasted more than 20 minutes.
The Israel Defense Forces said the gunmen had apparently intended to reach a nearby highway and attack civilians but instead encountered the checkpoint. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said security forces were instructed to cordon off Hebron immediately and prepare for a full closure of the West Bank.
After an emergency security meeting and a visit to Hebron, Netanyahu ordered preparations for what he called a “very extensive” military operation. He said troops would enter the attackers’ neighborhood, evacuate residents, search homes, seize weapons and destroy what he described as militant infrastructure. His office said the planned action would use methods previously employed in refugee camps in the northern West Bank.
The restrictions come before Israel’s election on Tuesday. An Israeli military spokesperson said West Bank crossings would be closed to Palestinians on election day, while Palestinian workers would be barred from entering Israeli settlements from Sunday through Tuesday. Middle East Eye reported that hundreds of Palestinians had already been expelled from homes in Hebron, citing the city’s mayor.
