Hundreds of thousands of people marched across France on Saturday against rising living costs, with PBS reporting that turnout exceeded 400,000. Sporadic violence broke out during demonstrations in Paris and several other cities, and police used tear gas and water cannons as some protests turned violent.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said nearly 1,000 people were arrested nationwide and described the violence involving black-clad “ultra-left” demonstrators as extremely elevated. Riot police moved to disperse crowds and protect shops and public buildings in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Lille, Toulouse, Montpellier and Nantes.
Authorities deployed about 70,000 security personnel in an effort to prevent a repeat of unrest a week earlier, when public buildings were vandalized, hundreds of businesses were looted and 2,700 people were arrested. Nunez said the latest security operation produced a more positive outcome, citing quicker police interventions, additional checks before demonstrations and stronger protection of commercial districts.
At least two people were seriously injured, Nunez said, including a man in Toulouse who reportedly lost fingers and another person in Clermont-Ferrand. Rights advocates and protesters criticized the police response, arguing that it infringed on freedoms and the right to demonstrate.
