A magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck a remote, high-altitude area of northern Tibet late Thursday, killing at least 16 people, injuring dozens and collapsing hundreds of homes, according to Chinese state media.

The earthquake hit at 10:33 p.m. near Baqen County in Nagqu, roughly 190 kilometres east-northeast of Nagqu city and about 390 kilometres northeast of Lhasa. Chinese authorities placed its depth at about 10 kilometres, while the U.S. Geological Survey reported a depth of about 18 kilometres.

The Nagqu media office said at least 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds had collapsed. Power and telecommunications were disrupted in some areas, trains were halted, and rockfalls forced authorities to restrict a section of National Highway 317 to emergency and official vehicles. State media footage showed residents fleeing buildings and rescue workers searching damaged homes in darkness. More than 12,000 people were moved to safer locations, Xinhua reported.

President Xi Jinping ordered an “all-out” search-and-rescue operation and called for prompt medical care and assistance for displaced residents. More than 1,600 local personnel were mobilised, alongside police, firefighters and armed police. Authorities delivered prefabricated homes, thousands of tents, generators, flashlights and winter clothing as intermittent snow was forecast.

Hundreds of aftershocks were recorded by Chinese monitors, while the USGS registered at least seven between magnitudes 4.3 and 5.2. Rescue teams continued house-to-house searches Friday.
