A court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, acquitted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday in a criminal defamation case stemming from remarks he made about Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 2018.
The court held that Gandhi’s description of Shah as a “murder accused” was not defamatory and that the Bharatiya Janata Party leader who filed the complaint was not an aggrieved person, according to Scroll.in and The Indian Express. The complaint was lodged by BJP leader Vijay Mishra after a Bengaluru press conference during the 2018 Karnataka election campaign.
Gandhi was unhurt in a collision involving several vehicles in his convoy while travelling to the court. The Hindu reported that party workers, officials and security personnel were injured.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court separately issued notices to Gandhi, the central government and Delhi Police over a journalist’s application accusing him of pushing her during an October 12 opposition march to the court connected to protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Journalist Richa Parashar alleged that she fell and was injured while pregnant. The court’s notice seeks responses and does not determine the allegation.
The march formed part of opposition protests over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls. Opposition parties allege the process could remove eligible voters and benefit the ruling BJP, while the commission says it is intended to verify and update the rolls. Gandhi has also called for a November 1 rally in New Delhi against alleged voter deletions.
