publishers 31articles 39first reported 26 Oct, 04:07 UTCdeveloping since 26 Oct · 7 editions

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won reelection to a fourth nonconsecutive term Sunday, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested runoff. Official results cited by Deutsche Welle gave Lula 51.7% of the vote and Bolsonaro 48.2%.

Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, refused to concede and called for the result to be annulled, according to Deutsche Welle. In his victory speech, Lula urged tighter regulation of large technology platforms following allegations that Meta interfered in the campaign. Trading on Brazil’s stock market was suspended for half an hour Monday as shares and the real fell.

Leaders from several regions congratulated Lula. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called the result a “historic election victory” and said Malaysia wanted to expand trade and investment, deepen bilateral ties and strengthen cooperation between ASEAN and Latin America.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung described Lula as “a special friend and comrade” and said he hoped to meet him again. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu said they looked forward to stronger cooperation with Brazil, while Seychelles President Patrick Herminie highlighted shared priorities including social justice, climate change and protection of the oceans. Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Lula’s contribution to relations between Brazil and Russia. Other leaders and Democratic lawmakers in the United States also welcomed the result.
