Thousands of California state employees held a one-day strike Wednesday, picketing and rallying in cities across the state amid stalled contract negotiations with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration.
SEIU Local 1000, which represents more than 100,000 employees, organized the walkout after its contract expired June 30. The union is seeking a 20% salary increase over three years, larger state contributions toward health care and greater flexibility to work remotely. Newsom has ordered state workers to report to offices four days a week.
Union President Anica Walls accused the administration of failing to bargain in good faith and called on officials to negotiate a contract that enables employees to afford necessities including housing, groceries and childcare. The union has also filed a complaint with California’s Public Employment Relations Board alleging bad-faith bargaining.
The California Department of Human Resources said state agencies had contingency plans for possible disruptions and that the department remained available to negotiate toward “a fair and responsible agreement.” CalHR had sought to block the walkout over concerns about essential services. The labor board identified about 5,000 essential employees who were expected to work during the strike, according to the union.
The action was the first strike by SEIU Local 1000 since the union was founded in 2004.
