A 39-year-old man suspected of killing one person and wounding five others in shootings west of Paris was transferred to a psychiatric unit Sunday for 48 hours of observation, France’s anti-terrorism prosecutors said. His police custody was suspended during the assessment.
The gunman allegedly opened fire from a car Friday at several locations in Trappes and neighboring La Verrière, including a petrol station, a medical center and a children’s playground. Authorities said the attack lasted about 15 minutes and involved an automatic weapon. Police arrested the suspect, identified by prosecutors as Kevin T., shortly afterward in nearby Coignières.
A 12-year-old girl who was shot eight times was among those wounded. The man killed was identified by his mixed martial arts academy as Pengo Bossio Wangi. Authorities said most of the victims were from foreign backgrounds.
President Emmanuel Macron, who visited Trappes after the shooting, called it a “terrorist and racist attack” and said victims had been targeted because of their skin color and religion. Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh described the shooting as racist and probably Islamophobic.
Anti-terrorism prosecutors are investigating whether the victims were targeted because of their actual or perceived race, ethnicity, nationality or religion. Authorities said a Sten submachine gun and a tear-gas grenade were found in the suspect’s car, and that his apartment had been booby-trapped.
