Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan held talks with Iranian leaders in Tehran on Monday in an effort to ease regional tensions and prevent renewed fighting in the Middle East.
The delegations included Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin and Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir. Iranian officials said Munir had proposed the four-country meeting and that Tehran agreed to host it.
The visitors were expected to meet President Masoud Pezeshkian and Supreme National Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said discussions would address the conflict involving the United States and Iran, Israeli policies, and developments in the Palestinian territories and around Lebanon. France 24 reported that Tehran described the discussions as “very good.”
Saudi official Rayed Krimly said the visit formed part of efforts by members of the Makkah Defence Alliance to promote dialogue and support mediation by Qatar and Pakistan. Iranian officials presented the talks as a step toward regional countries taking greater responsibility for their own security.
Separately, reports said Rezaei told Munir that Iran would not allow enriched nuclear material to leave the country. News18, citing other media, reported that Munir had conveyed U.S. demands concerning Iran’s nuclear program and that Tehran insisted Washington first accept seven Iranian conditions. Those reported exchanges were not detailed in official statements on Monday’s multilateral talks.
