Ukraine Says Starlink and Starshield Connectivity Restored After Restrictions

Ukraine said its Starlink and Starshield connectivity had returned to operational speeds after restrictions disrupted military communications and drone operations for more than a week.
Defense Minister Yevheniy Khmara said monitoring systems recorded stable connections on equipment moving faster than 400 kilometers per hour. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the restored service was needed for frontline logistics and defense against jet-powered Russian drones. The restoration followed President Donald Trump’s statement that he had asked SpaceX chief Elon Musk to lift the restrictions.
Musk acknowledged that SpaceX had restricted commercial Starlink, saying Ukraine violated its terms by using the civilian service for offensive drone strikes. “That loophole was closed last week,” he wrote on X. He said Starshield was a separate military system controlled by the U.S. government and denied responsibility for decisions governing it.
Ukrainian officials disputed Musk’s allegation. Presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov said commercial Starlink terminals in Ukraine were limited to speeds of 70 to 90 kilometers per hour and did not operate on Russian territory, making their use for medium- or long-range strikes physically impossible. Former Ukrainian Defense Ministry adviser Serhii Sternenko said moving terminals had to be registered with Starshield, preventing civilian Starlink from being used for drone missions.
The restrictions reportedly caused Ukrainian drones to lose connectivity at higher speeds, forcing some missions to be canceled and complicating reconnaissance, logistics and interception operations.
