Romania blames Russia after drone strike sinks cargo ship in Black Sea

Romania blamed Russia for a drone strike that sank the Comoros-flagged cargo ship *Khoryv* off its Black Sea coast on Friday, killing one sailor and leaving three missing.

The vessel was struck about 13 nautical miles off the port of Constanța, just outside Romanian territorial waters, according to Romanian authorities. It had departed Turkey and was heading toward the Romanian port of Sulina. The crew included Ukrainian and Azerbaijani nationals.

Romania’s naval authority said the ship sent a distress signal at about 10 a.m. local time, prompting a search-and-rescue operation involving the Coast Guard and maritime rescue services. Nine sailors were rescued and one body was recovered. Heavy rain, poor visibility and unfavorable flying conditions hampered the response, preventing a requested Black Hawk helicopter from reaching the area.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan described the sinking as a consequence of Russia’s war against Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also condemned the attack, calling it a Russian escalation in the Black Sea. Russian officials did not immediately comment.

The sinking followed other recent drone incidents near Romania. Romanian F-16 fighter jets previously shot down two Geran-family attack drones over the Black Sea after they entered Romanian airspace near Sulina, according to the country’s Defence Ministry.
