King Charles III praised Oman’s efforts to keep the Strait of Hormuz open as he welcomed Sultan Haitham bin Tariq for a three-day state visit to Britain, the first by an Omani ruler in 44 years.

Speaking at a state banquet for 160 guests at Windsor Castle, Charles described Oman as a trusted mediator and thanked the sultan for the country’s “noble efforts” to protect one of the world’s most important shipping routes. The king, who spoke partly in Arabic and quoted poetry, said Oman’s policy of “constructive neutrality” deserved respect beyond the Gulf.

The visit began with a horse-drawn procession to Windsor Castle and meetings with members of the royal family. Sultan Haitham presented Charles with the Order of Al Said, which the king wore at the banquet. Prince William also took part in the welcome; Charles highlighted cooperation between William and Oman’s Crown Prince Theyazin bin Haitham as joint patrons of the Jewel of Arabia expedition.

The visit also includes talks on trade, defence, education and investment. British and Omani officials are expected to sign several agreements, including British participation in a $1 billion data centre in Salalah. UK Export Finance plans to raise its financing capacity for British exports to Oman to £7 billion, with further investment anticipated in renewable energy, technology and health care.
