Thirteen of 17 prisoners who escaped from a district jail near Andipatti in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district were recaptured within a day, while police continued searching for the remaining four, The Indian Express reported.
The prisoners escaped late Monday after one inmate appeared to suffer an epileptic fit. When a guard entered the cell to respond, the inmates allegedly attacked him, causing a head injury, and fled through the jail’s main entrance.
Authorities formed 17 special teams, deployed more than 300 police personnel and used drones during searches around Theni. Police also checked vehicles and alerted districts across the state border in Kerala. One prisoner was found in bushes behind the jail, three were caught walking along roads, another was apprehended while boarding an autorickshaw, and eight were located in a forested area. Director General of Prisons Sandeep Rai Rathore said the other four would be caught soon. Nine prison employees, including three head constables, were suspended.
The escape also prompted a political dispute. Former chief minister M K Stalin criticized Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government, comparing recent jailbreaks to the television series *Prison Break* and accusing the administration of failing to maintain security. TVK’s IT wing responded by mocking Stalin and invoking alleged scandals during the DMK’s time in government.
