North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made an unannounced, day-long visit to the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday, crossing the New Yalu River Bridge about a week after it opened to traffic.
Chinese state news agency Xinhua said Wang Huning, China’s top political adviser and fourth-ranked official, accompanied Kim during the visit and saw him off at the bridge. Wang conveyed greetings from President Xi Jinping, while the two countries pledged to strengthen strategic coordination and expand economic, trade and people-to-people exchanges. Xinhua did not report a meeting between Kim and Xi.
South Korean officials and lawmaker Youn Kun-young said Kim was understood to have met Chinese Premier Li Qiang, although that meeting was not mentioned in China’s official account. Xinhua reported that Kim attended a memorial ceremony for fallen soldiers and visited an automobile factory before returning home.
The trip took place near the anniversary observed by Beijing and Pyongyang of Chinese troops entering the 1950-1953 Korean War on North Korea’s side.
The four-lane bridge linking Dandong with the North Korean city of Sinuiju was completed in 2014 but remained unused for about 12 years because connecting roads and customs facilities had not been finished on the North Korean side. Its opening is expected to increase cross-border commerce with China, North Korea’s largest trading partner and principal economic and diplomatic supporter.
