Trump targets El-Sayed with anti-Muslim attacks at Michigan rally

President Donald Trump attacked Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s faith and loyalty at a Sunday campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, calling him a “jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member” and saying he was “on the side of the terrorists.”

Trump, campaigning for Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, also said El-Sayed should pass through a metal detector before entering the Senate. He repeatedly invoked the Sept. 11 attacks and compared blocking El-Sayed from the chamber to the actions of passengers who resisted hijackers aboard United Flight 93.

El-Sayed, a former Detroit health official who would become the first Muslim U.S. senator if elected, has denied ties to extremist groups and previously said he would “absolutely” disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. At a Detroit news conference Monday, he called Trump’s accusations “deflections and deceptions based on no evidence” and argued that Republicans were trying to distract voters from fuel and grocery prices and the war with Iran.

Bishara Bahbah, a founder of Arab Americans for Trump who helped with Trump’s outreach to Arab American voters in 2024, condemned the remarks as racist and said they had crossed “a red line.” At a Sunday rally with El-Sayed, Sen. Bernie Sanders accused Trump and his allies of using Islamophobia to foment division.

The closely contested race between El-Sayed and Rogers is among those that could determine control of the Senate.
