Brazilian authorities cancelled Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s passports on Tuesday after he failed to surrender them under a Supreme Court order barring him from leaving the country, according to police and multiple news reports. His whereabouts remained unclear.
The order, issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, required Bolsonaro to hand over his regular and diplomatic passports within 24 hours. The Guardian reported that the ruling referred to a money-laundering investigation and also prohibited Bolsonaro from contacting lawyer Willer Tomaz. Bolsonaro denies wrongdoing.
Bolsonaro, who lost Sunday’s presidential runoff to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said in a social-media video on Monday that federal police had served him with the order. He said he intended to remain in Brazil and challenge the decision legally. He has not conceded the election, although his Liberal Party has acknowledged the result.
Reports that Bolsonaro crossed into Argentina en route to the United States have not been independently confirmed. An anonymous Brazilian police source told AFP there was no formal record of him leaving Brazil, while Argentine security and immigration authorities denied reports that he had entered Argentina.
Bolsonaro’s brother Eduardo, who lives in the United States, had suggested before the election that Flávio should leave Brazil if defeated. Flávio said he had never planned to do so.
