Britain will deploy Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to help defend cities and critical infrastructure from escalating Houthi missile and drone attacks, the UK government announced Tuesday.
The aircraft will operate only in a defensive role and will not strike Houthi targets in Yemen, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said. The deployment, authorized by Prime Minister Andy Burnham following a Saudi request, will also include an Atlas A400M transport aircraft and military advisers. Britain has extended an offer to provide air-to-air refuelling for Saudi aircraft for another 90 days.
The decision follows repeated attacks on Saudi airports, energy facilities and ports after a truce in Yemen broke down in September. Riyadh’s international airport has been targeted multiple times in October, with strikes killing civilians and injuring hundreds. Fighting has also intensified inside Yemen between the Iran-aligned Houthis and the internationally recognized government backed by Saudi Arabia.
Saudi-led forces have conducted air and artillery strikes in Houthi-controlled areas, while the Houthis have attacked Saudi-backed forces and targets inside the kingdom. Both sides report substantial casualties in Yemen.
The renewed conflict has disrupted oil exports and prompted Saudi Arabia to postpone its Future Investment Initiative conference until 2027. The International Monetary Fund’s regional director said the attacks have so far had only a limited impact on the Saudi economy because of strong domestic demand, while warning that geopolitical uncertainty remains a threat.
