A localized ceasefire began Tuesday in and around the Russian-occupied southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky, with Ukrainian and Russian officials saying the pause was holding as preparations began for humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations.
The truce took effect at about 3 a.m. local time and is scheduled to continue until late Sunday, according to Ukrainian officials. U.S. First Lady Melania Trump said its geographical scope had been expanded within the Kherson region and that the operation was brought forward by two days. A Ukrainian human rights ombudsman representative said the agreement covered the entire region, though Trump did not specify its boundaries.
Oleshky lies across the Dnipro River from the Ukrainian-held city of Kherson and has been occupied by Russian forces since early in the 2022 invasion. Roughly 1,500 to 2,000 residents are believed to remain amid severe shortages of food, medicine, water, electricity and heating. The agreement is intended to permit aid convoys and allow residents who want to leave to evacuate.
The White House said Melania Trump and her representatives worked with Ukrainian and Russian leaders to arrange the ceasefire. The Vatican has separately suggested Pope Leo helped secure the pause through calls with the countries’ presidents.
The ceasefire is limited to the humanitarian operation and does not represent a broader halt to the war. Elsewhere in Ukraine, authorities reported overnight Russian missile and drone attacks on cities and infrastructure as the Oleshky truce began.
