publishers 113articles 207first reported 23 Oct, 08:45 UTCdeveloping since 23 Oct · 10 editions

The Metropolitan Police is reviewing how it handled allegations involving Thomas Markle Sr after accusations surfaced that he possessed child sexual abuse images.

Scotland Yard said it received a letter in January 2019 containing claims about alleged offences outside the United Kingdom. The force passed the information to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their awareness but did not share the allegations with other law-enforcement agencies. It is considering whether to refer its handling of the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The allegations became public after The Sun reported that Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr, said he found images among belongings from their father’s former home in the Philippines. The South China Morning Post reported that Thomas Jr handed four boxes containing phones, computer equipment and other belongings to the Philippine National Police’s Women and Children Protection Centre. Investigators there are conducting digital forensic examinations.

Meghan said she was “deeply distressed” and that her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed. She said the letter shared with her contained troubling allegations against her father and that she had been assured they were being investigated. She also said she had ended contact with him and kept him from her children to protect them.

Thomas Markle Sr has denied the allegations, describing them to the Daily Mail as “sick lies.”
