The BJP and its allies recorded strong results in Legislative Council elections across Karnataka, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, while counting continued in Maharashtra. The elections for 28 graduate and teachers’ constituency seats across the four states were conducted using ballot papers.

In Karnataka, the BJP retained the North East Teachers’, West Graduates’ and South East Graduates’ seats, while ally Janata Dal (Secular) defeated the sitting Congress member in Bengaluru Teachers’, completing an NDA sweep of all four seats.

In Bihar, the BJP-led NDA won four of eight seats, according to The Indian Express. The Rashtriya Janata Dal and Jan Suraaj Party won one each, while independents secured two. Jan Suraaj’s victory in Darbhanga Teachers’ gave the party its first seat in the Bihar Legislative Council.

Eight results had been declared in Uttar Pradesh, with the BJP winning five and the Samajwadi Party three. Results for three additional seats remained awaited. SP president Akhilesh Yadav alleged deliberate delays in counting and sought intervention by election authorities.

In Maharashtra, the latest trends put the ruling Mahayuti alliance ahead in three of five constituencies and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi ahead in two. Officials had not declared final results.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that the Congress had not won any of the 12 seats it contested and pointed to the use of ballot papers, amid the party’s criticism of electronic voting machines and the electoral process.
