French police clash with protesters after nationwide cost-of-living marches

publishers 118articles 196first reported 1 Oct, 12:56 UTCdeveloping since 1 Oct · 32 editions

French police used tear gas and water cannons on Saturday after sporadic clashes broke out near the end of largely peaceful demonstrations over living costs, inequality and education funding.

The Interior Ministry estimated that 410,000 people joined 289 protests nationwide, including 110,000 in Paris. The CGT trade union put the national turnout at nearly 800,000 and estimated 250,000 in the capital.

Authorities deployed about 70,000 security personnel following widespread rioting and looting during protests the previous weekend. The main Paris march was restricted to the southeastern edge of the city and began peacefully, but clashes erupted near its endpoint at Porte de Vincennes. Masked protesters threw objects and fireworks, while police responded with tear gas and water cannons.

Clashes or police crowd-control measures were also reported in Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Grenoble, Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, Nice, Nantes and Strasbourg. Street fires burned in Marseille and Lyon. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said nearly 1,000 arrests were made nationwide. The Paris prosecutor’s office reported 64 arrests connected to the capital’s demonstration, including six minors.

Saturday’s turnout was lower than the 550,000 people the Interior Ministry said demonstrated on October 17, when shops and public buildings were looted or damaged. The current protest movement began with student demands for improved school conditions and expanded to include unions and workers seeking relief from rising costs.
