Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth term as Brazil’s president after defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday’s runoff, according to official results from the Superior Electoral Court.
Lula received about 51.8% of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 48.2%, a margin of roughly 4.4 million votes. The victory completed a comeback after Lula trailed Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, in the first round. Political polls had indicated a close contest, while prediction markets had heavily favored Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro refused to concede and said he would seek to annul the election after Brazil’s Supreme Court extended voting nationwide by two hours. The extension followed complaints about transport disruptions in some cities; Bolsonaro had also sought longer voting in regions affected by heavy rain. An analysis cited by The Irish Times found that fewer than 35,000 votes were cast during the additional period.
Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party nevertheless recognized the official result on Monday, while saying his concerns should be addressed through democratic debate. Bolsonaro also said he would comply with a federal police order to surrender his passports and denied planning to leave Brazil.
U.S. President Donald Trump called the election “rigged” without providing evidence. Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin rejected that claim as unfounded. Leaders from across Latin America, Europe, China and India congratulated Lula, while Brazilian stocks and the real fell sharply following the result.
