US singer Chris Brown was given an eight-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months on Monday after pleading guilty to affray over a 2023 attack at a London nightclub.
The sentence means Brown, 37, will not be imprisoned unless he commits another offence during the suspension period. Southwark Crown Court also ordered him to pay £1,500 in costs.
The case arose from an incident at Tape, a private members’ club in London’s Mayfair district, on Feb. 19, 2023. The court heard that Brown struck music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw with a glass tequila bottle, hitting him twice in the head. Diaw required hospital treatment.
Judge Tony Baumgartner described the assault as serious violence in a crowded nightclub and said using the bottle against Diaw’s head was “plainly dangerous.” He also said the violence was not planned and cited Brown’s guilty plea, compliance with bail conditions and low risk of reoffending when imposing the suspended sentence.
Brown’s vocal coach and co-defendant, rapper Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray. He received a four-month sentence suspended for 12 months and was ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.
Brown had denied more serious charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon. Those charges were dropped after the guilty pleas to affray.
