The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday named Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri as its candidate for the November 12 Rajya Sabha byelection in Madhya Pradesh.
The vacancy arose after L. Murugan resigned from the Upper House on October 14. Murugan’s term had been scheduled to run until April 2030. The BJP’s central election committee approved Puri’s candidature, the party said.
Puri has represented Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha since January 2018, and his current term ends on November 25. He was not included among the BJP candidates announced earlier in October for Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. As Puri is not a Lok Sabha member, he would have to return to Parliament within six months of leaving the Rajya Sabha to continue serving as a Union minister.
Members of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly will elect the new Rajya Sabha member. Voting and counting are scheduled for November 12. Scroll.in reported that the BJP’s strength in the state Assembly makes Puri likely to win the seat unopposed.
