North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made an unannounced one-day visit to the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday, his first trip to China in more than a year.
Kim crossed the Yalu River using the newly completed bridge linking North Korea and China, according to reports by Al Jazeera and The Korea Herald. During the visit, he toured a Chinese bus factory, the South China Morning Post reported.
Kim was accompanied in Dandong by Wang Huning, China’s fourth-ranking official, according to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency. Wang conveyed greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who was not present.
The trip came one day before the anniversary of Chinese troops entering the 1950-1953 Korean War in support of North Korea. It also took place as Beijing and Pyongyang seek to expand economic ties.
South Korean lawmaker Youn Kun-young, a member of the National Assembly’s Intelligence Committee, said the visit demonstrated Kim’s confidence and readiness for more active diplomacy. Youn described suggestions that the trip was connected to a possible meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump as an “exaggerated interpretation.”
