India’s opposition INDIA bloc is escalating protests against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, filing a joint petition with the Supreme Court and planning a November 1 rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has urged students, farmers, workers, women, young people and traders to join the “Save the Vote, Save the Country” march and rally. He alleged that eligible voters’ names had been removed and election rules violated to benefit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The Election Commission has defended the revision as an effort to verify and update voter lists.
Opposition leaders, activists and civil society members marched along a heavily barricaded route to the Supreme Court on October 12 before filing the petition. The bloc is also demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the revision.
The Chamber of Trade and Industry asked Gandhi on Wednesday for a meeting and urged him to postpone the November 1 event until after Deepavali. The group said traders representing 20 markets near Ramlila Maidan feared that a rally expected to attract 10 lakh people could disrupt business during a busy festive period. Chairman Brijesh Goyal said the traders would withdraw their objection if Gandhi persuaded them that the event would increase business, but wanted postponement if they demonstrated that it would cause losses.
