American rapper Macklemore opened his “Free Palestine” tour before a sold-out crowd in Dublin on Monday, calling for unity and “shared humanity” and pledging to continue speaking out about the war in Gaza.
The tour began weeks after Macklemore was removed as a supporting act from Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour following pro-Palestinian remarks. The rapper had shouted “Free Palestine” and told Palestinians they were “not forgotten.” At the Dublin concert, he said he would keep fighting until his “last breath,” Reuters reported.
Macklemore has said proceeds from the tour will support organizations helping Palestinians, according to Middle East Eye. Hozier, the Irish rap group Kneecap and actor Mark Ruffalo were among those who expressed support during the opening event, according to reports from Yahoo and Variety.
Fans gathered outside the Dublin venue praised Macklemore’s position. Michael Keating, a 31-year-old insurance worker, told Agence France-Presse that the rapper had “put himself on the line instead of taking the easy way out.” Ireland has seen widespread public support for Palestinians during the Gaza war.
