A Utah judge postponed a decision on when Tyler Robinson will stand trial for the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, according to Reuters. KSL reported that trial dates could be included in a November scheduling order.

Robinson’s defense attorneys have suggested a 2029 trial, arguing that they need several years to prepare for the complex death penalty case. They said prosecutors have turned over tens of thousands of files and that extensive work is required to investigate Robinson’s background, address possible mitigating factors and prepare for jury selection.

Prosecutors have said they expect the trial to last about 17 weeks and could be ready by October 2027. To avoid holding proceedings over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, they proposed a Jan. 31, 2028, start. Attorneys for Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, urged the court to begin the trial in October 2027, calling the defense proposal “absurd” and accusing Robinson of seeking delay.

Robinson, 23, has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder in Kirk’s shooting at Utah Valley University. Prosecutors allege that he targeted Kirk because of his political beliefs. Robinson could face the death penalty if convicted.
